Giuliani Inspired Etudes

Composer: Lindsay Straw

Key: Multiple

Tuning: Standard

As loosely promised in last month's Right Hand Review video, I've come up with three little etudes inspired by three different Giuliani right hand exercises! I've taken exercises 2, 30 and 83 and made them into more melodic and harmonically interesting little tunes that each have their own challenge.

If you don't already have a copy of all the exercises, you can download this free PDF.

Giuliani Inspired #2 (01:47)

This three finger triplet exercise is the easiest of the three! Like the original exercise, I start out on a C chord, and the subsequent chords are all in first position. The only thing to note is that some of the voicings or fingerings might not be what you're used to doing, so watch for those.

Giuliani Inspired #30 (05:21)

Definitely one of my favorite patterns, this lush skipping pattern serves well as a textural kind of piece. I've kept the chords in the left hand a bit simpler, mostly using two and three finger shapes that slide up and down the neck.

Giuliani Inspired #83 (12:26)

While this pattern might be easier than the last, in order to get a melodic arc I ended up using lots of barre chords up the neck. If you're like me and you try to avoid barre chords as much as possible, this will be a good challenge for staying relaxed and fluid while shifting in and out of full and partial barre shapes.
