Passim Summer Class: Irish Pub Songs

A More beginner-friendly four-week class to get you set with a collection of classic Irish songs to bring to your next session or jam!

Irish Pub Songs - Tuesdays Jul 30, Aug 6, 13 and 20

Learn a collection of classic Irish pub songs and ballads so you’re ready to bring a song or two to your next session! In this class, the focus will be on singing so no instrument is required, but chord charts will also be provided for anyone who would like to bring theirs. We’ll learn a variety of well-known and more obscure songs that have great choruses, memorable melodies and straightforward arrangements. Along the way we’ll discuss the history, symbols/meaning, and the vocal style and ornamentation. Each week we’ll add a new song or two while further practicing and developing the past weeks’ songs.

After learning a lot and getting some great feedback with my Celtic Songs class where the focus was on long, complex solo singing ballads, I wanted to offer something more beginner friendly for folks who are totally new to the Celtic music world. Think of this as an “Irish Songs Starter Pack”! We’re going to focus on the “classic hits” that you’re likely to hear at sessions and that listeners often to request. Still fun to sing solo, but more suited to adding harmonies and accompaniment. We’ll be learning and discussing new topics each week, but my hope is that it’ll be more like an ensemble class where we can gel the arrangements together over the month, too.
